The challenge of chemical peels and dark skin

For most aesthetic professionals, the challenge of treating darker skin tones has been a source of disappointment and, in some cases, concern.  Used appropriately, chemical peels are an excellent treatment for a variety of skin concerns and problems.  However, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can be great in Fitzpatrick IV - VI skin types if inappropriate peels or protocols are used.  This has limited treatment options for Asian, Hispanic, and African American patients.

So, the question is:  How can we peel black skin safely?  Within my aesthetic practice, the answer has come in the form of the Vi Peel.  The Vi Peel is the first peel specifically designed for darker skin types and helps reduce sun damage, age spots, fine lines, and even acne. In addition, the VI Peel is faster and less painful than most previous procedures.

What makes the VI Peel different?

Unlike other peels, the VI Peel is a combination of five acids, including Trichloracetic Acid (TCA), Tretinoic Acid (Retin-A), Salicylic Acid, and Phenol, all in a 15% concentration.  The peel also contains L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).  Peels of the past have epitomized the "no pain, no gain" approach to skincare; the deeper and more painful the peel, and more downtime, the better the results.  The VI Peel is virtually painless and has minimal downtime, yet produces dramatic, visible results in just days.  The peel requires no prep, is self-neutralizing, and works well on darker skin tones.  The peels are a synergistic blend with vitamins and minerals to treat, soothe, and nourish the skin at the same time we are getting deep penetration of the acids.  Patients with darker skin tones, including black skin, have an effective peel without the limitations and concerns of other peels.

Post-Peel Skincare

Patients, including those with darker skin tones, can see a big improvement in pigmentation and skin texture in only seven days with the ViPeel. Melasma, acne scars, and severe pigmentation may take 2-3 peels, with one month between each peel. The benefits of the ViPeel can be prolonged by maintaining a home care regimen that is appropriate for your skin, as recommended by a skincare professional, such as those at Medical Day Spa of Chapel Hill.
