What is Swedish Massage?

The term Swedish massage is often used generically by spas and massage therapists to describe a relaxing, lighter form of massage. However, the term refers to a specific style of bodywork that, ironically, was not developed in Sweden or by a Swedish person. It is a style of massage that developed over time, eventually adopting French names for the five primary massage strokes. This style of massage is only called Swedish massage in English and Dutch speaking countries, and in Hungary. In all of other areas of the world, including Sweden, it is referred to as Classic Massage.

In modern American spas, when a Swedish session is offered, the therapist usually uses a blend of strokes from the classic (Swedish) massage as well as strokes from other forms. The common theme to these is a massage with the goals of relaxation, increased circulation, improved immune function and over all healthy well-being. This is contrasted with other forms that may focus on specific muscles, injuries, chronic tension patterns or joint functionality.
Traditional Swedish massage utilizes these five strokes:
Effleurage
: flowing, gliding, or sliding long strokes which increase the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids through the body.
Petrissage:
a kneading stroke that lifts and compresses the muscle tissue rhythmically to create space in the muscle, break up adhesions and warm the fibers.
Friction:
a focused, localized stroke which often goes against the grain of the fibers to bring warmth and blood flow to tissues, while also breaking up scar tissue and locked muscle tension.
Tapotement:
a rhythmic, percussive stroke which commonly includes tapping, drumming, cupping, beating, and chopping. The effect is both invigorating and surprisingly soothing.
Vibration:
a technique that shakes, vibrates or jiggles the limbs or tissues. This loosens joints, breaks up spasms and is incredibly relaxing.

Since Swedish sessions are now commonly a blend of techniques, it is best to tell your therapist that you’d like the classic massage style using the Swedish strokes if you would like to try it. You will find the experience to be very relaxing and detoxifying.
