Winter Nail News From Tanzi

Fingernails can indicate greater health issues. The most talked about issue is often brittle nails. You may be unsure about what’s going on with your body internally that might cause your nails to be physically unpleasing. The condition of one’s nails has been shown to reveal answers to health issues that might have otherwise been over looked.

The purpose of our fingernails is to protect the fingertips from injury. Nails are made of protein, keratin, and sulfur. In the health field, nails can reveal a lot about your health based on their color and condition. Nail abnormalities/changes are often the result of specific conditions and/or nutritional deficiencies. Deficiencies can cause the following changes in nails:

·         A lack of vitamin A/calcium can cause dryness/brittleness.
·         A vitamin B deficiency can lead to fragility; as a result, horizontal/vertical ridges appear.
·         Insufficient intake of vitamin B12 can lead to excessive dryness, rounded and curved nail ends, and darkened nails.
·         Lack of protein, vitamin C, and/or folic acid may cause hangnails.
·         Thick nails may indicate that the vascular system is weak and blood is not circulating properly.
·         Brittle nails may indicate iron deficiency and possible thyroid problems.
·         Dark nails and/or thin, spoon-shaped nails may be a sign of anemia.
·         Bleeding on or around nails may occur with rheumatoid arthritis.
·         Nails that have separated from the nail bed may be a sign of a thyroid disorder.
